The novels behind TV’s Dark Winds

Dark Winds, the popular television series based on characters and stories by Tony Hillerman and Anne Hillerman, premiered on AMC in June 2022 and will offer Season 4 in 2026. Some of the seasons are also available on Netflix.

Filmed in the Hillermans' home state of New Mexico, Dark Winds features Zahn McClarnon, Jessica Matten, and Kiowa Gordon in the roles of Joe Leaphorn, Bernadette Manuelito and Jim Chee. The first four seasons were inspired by Tony Hillerman’s Listening Woman, People of Darkness, Dance Hall of the Dead, The Sinister Pig and The Ghost Way. The series’ Bernadette Manuelito – a strong and competent crime fighter – is in the spirit readers find in Anne Hillerman's books.

In a wonderful tie-in to the Dark Winds series, Jessica Matten is the reader for Lost Birds and Shadow of the Solstice, Anne's 2024 and 2025 novels.

"I hope that Dark Winds will make viewers curious about the Hillerman books that inspired the project. The writers and directors, many of whom are indigenous, have added their own interesting twists. I look forward to each new season of Dark Winds with enthusiasm," Anne said.
